Gwen Toevs grew up on the edge of a canyon in New Mexico, then made the redwoods and ocean of Santa Cruz their home for the last 34 years. Gwen has always been fascinated by art, the natural world, and education, and has combined these passions in various ways through different careers.

Gwen’s favorite illustration medium is watercolor with digital editing. Gwen is the author/illustrator of Fangtooth and Blue, about a deep sea Fangtooth fish that is afraid of the light, but overcomes her fear with bravery and the help of her friend, a blue shark.

Gwen is also the author/illustrator of Ratchet and Nutbolt, a STEM book that focuses on trying different solutions when one’s favorite toy breaks. Whimsical automechanic robots try a variety of adhesives and tools to put Nutbolt back together.

Gwen has also illustrated Alice in Wonderland, focusing on empowering and humorous parts of Lewis Carol’s beloved children’s story.

Gwen earned a BA in Fine Arts and Certification in Agroecology from UC Santa Cruz, and a teaching credential from San Francisco State University. In May they will complete an MFA in Illustration from The Academy of Art University. Previously Gwen was an art and classroom teacher for eighteen years, as well as a graphic designer for an educational software company and local businesses.
